For nearly 20 years, residents of Portland's historic Sunnyside neighborhood have come together to repaint the sunflower and beautify the piazza at SE 33rd & Yamhill. This was one of Portland City Repair’s first projects, reclaiming underutilized space. In recent years, Portland Street Art Alliance manages the annual repaint.
The intersection has reached iconic status and there's a real sense of community here. Locals and visitors slow down as they pass through to enjoy the welcoming atmosphere; from the giant, bright sunflower painted on the street, to the artwork displayed on telephone poles, to the plants, to the book exchange.
